“Vacancy – Housing Now” – Project Initiative in Bavaria

On April 20, 2026, the More than Four Walls team participated in the event “Vacancy – Housing Now”, hosted by the Bavarian State Ministry of Housing, Building and Transport in Munich. The event focused on how existing vacant properties can be activated and made available for residential use.

The discussions centered on current strategies and practical examples for mobilizing unused housing and building structures. Topics included legal frameworks, municipal scope for action, and approaches to collaboration with citizens, planners, and other relevant stakeholders.

For the More than Four Walls project, the event provided valuable points of connection: the activation of vacant properties is a key field of action in the context of accommodating refugees and developing sustainable housing solutions. In particular, the interplay between municipal governance, cooperative approaches, and innovative usage concepts directly relates to the project’s core questions.

The exchange with representatives from public administration, policy, and practice generated important impulses for the ongoing project work. The insights gained will be integrated into the ongoing discussions within the knowledge network as well as into the collaboration with the pilot municipalities.
