Summer barbecue at ‚GU Mitte‘ (Hildesheim)

In the Hildesheim pilot project, refugees and international care workers are housed together in a single accommodation facility, GU Mitte. To foster a sense of community rather than mere coexistence, the pilot project aims, amongst other things, to create opportunities for residents to meet.

On 7 August 2026, a summer barbecue in the accommodation’s courtyard provided an opportunity for all residents to get to know one another. Around 50 people came together to barbecue, eat, and chat. At the same time, the event provided an opportunity to find out from the participants what further activities they would like the social workers at the GU to organise to spend their leisure time and make new contacts, both inside and outside the accommodation,.
