At the end of August, as part of the pilot project in the district of Cuxhaven, representatives from several municipalities within the district met with district staff to plan the next steps in the project.
Earlier this year, a needs analysis had been carried out in the municipalities within the district as part of the pilot project. During the analysis, not only administrative staff but also welfare organisations and refugees had the opportunity to share their perspectives. The focus was primarily on current challenges relating to the accommodation of refugees, potential for change, existing solutions and how cooperation between the district and its municipalities is perceived.
The most significant challenges emerge due to a shortage of affordable housing, which is also prevalent in the Cuxhaven district: recognised refugees who are entitled to move out of municipal accommodation are finding it more difficult to secure private housing and are therefore remaining in council accommodation for longer.
The measures now to be developed therefore aim to support refugees in their search for housing and to adapt administrative procedures accordingly. They will be implemented jointly by the district and its member municipalities over the coming months.
