How can communal living among a diverse group of people under one roof look like and work well? This is the central question examined by the project “HOW TO: COMMUNITY LIVING” by “Unter einem Dach e.V.” in Hanover. In order to discuss this topic and learn from good examples from all over Germany, November 7th, 2025, was designated a “day like a flat-sharing community” at the association’s premises.
During table discussions, impulses on various ideas, projects, and plans provided impetus for how communal living can succeed and what possibilities there are for making housing more socially inclusive.
In one such discussion, the “Mehr als vier Wände” (More than four walls) project directed the attention on refugees. Among other things, the discussion focused on what can be learned from the experiences of housing projects (for non-refugees) in order to provide good communal accommodation for refugees. In addition, considerations were raised as to how refugees can be (better) integrated into regular housing projects.
